Book Review – “The Pocket Disaster Survival Guide”

“The Pocket Disaster Survival Guide” written by Harris J. Andrews and J. Alexander Bowers is filled with good advice for surviving disasters both natural and manmade.  The subtitle is “What to Do When the Lights Go Out”.  As I read this book I was struck by all the things I hadn’t thought about; like how do you find your family if a disaster strikes and communications are down? 

We take cell phones for granted.  They will not work without power or if the cell towers are destroyed.  You need a plan and this guide is filled with good ideas for a workable plan.

The guide includes chapters on disaster kits, power, water, food, first aid, communications, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, winter storms, tornados, wildfires, terrorist incidents and more.   Its 156 pages are filled with “to the point” advice.  It is a book that will increase your chances of surviving a disaster.

There are suggestions on what to do if you are trapped in your car by a blizzard or winter storm, preparing your house for a wildfire, what to do after a volcanic explosion, surviving a power blackout and much more.  

The section on disaster supply kits is well thought out and even includes good suggestions for a pet emergency kit. 

No matter where we live the possibility of a disaster is always with us.  The key to surviving is preparation.  Your kids are in school, you and your spouse are at work and disaster strikes.  The cell phones are down and you can’t get home because of the disaster.   What is your plan?  Do you know where your family will meet?

This book is for people who want to increase their chances of surviving in the event of a disaster.  Hoping it will never happen to you is not a plan.   Now is the time to plan for survival.
